are sparkling as artists honor over 200 residents.
NE Washington, D.C. Š September 15, 2004 Š
206 heroes of NE DC will see their names
on the street curbs during SaturdayÕs dedication ceremony. The mosaic artwork, which lines
the street curbs, bears the names of neighborhood residents and famous athletes
who grew up in the area. Marvin Gaye Park will be presented Saturday to his
wife, Sheryl Gaye. Nannie Helen Bouroughs Ave will be unveiled to honor the
career and legacy of Coach Bob Headen of HD Woodson. The coach will be there to accept his tribute along with
Orlando Brown (Ravens) and some of the other 15 HD athletes who have risen to
pro-sport status. In addition, 190
local residents will accept their Hall of Fame status.
The ceremony will be held at
3pm at 5200 Foote Street NE Washington DC. A bike raffle and a large feast will be enjoyed throughout
performances by the East River Steel Band (4:00p), the Doc Powell Malcolm X
Drummers and Dancers (3:00p) and Earl Simpson and Joseph Witherspoon (2:00p).
The Hall of Fame
was created by a core team of 10 artists (artontheblock.net) and Washington
Parks and People who taught over 340 DC, MD, and VA residents 5 mosaic arts:
Granite, Glass and Mirror, Ceramic Molds, Tile, and Recycled Materials (car
keys, CDs, seashells, plates, etc.).
The project was made possible by the DC Commission on Arts and
Humanities, Craig Duckworth of Arc Stone, and the 7C ANC Commissioners who will
all be there to accept the groupÕs handmade trophies.
Steve Coleman and Washington Parks and People have been
working on revitalizing Marvin Gaye Park and Watts Branch Park for years. They have dedicated resources to
re-open the historic BarnettÕs Cafˇ with hopes to turn it into a bike shop and
internet cafˇ for kids.
DonÕt miss this historic event.
